Star Trek: Discovery Mid-Season Finale Review

Full spoilers follow for this episode. Click here if you want to learn how to watch Star Trek: Discovery.

And so we close out the first half of Discovery Season 1 with a lot of action, some intriguing character beats, a couple of “huh?!” moments, and a fairly lukewarm cliffhanger.

Things pick up essentially where the last episode left off, as Starfleet has ordered the Discovery to retreat before the Klingons arrive at Pahvo. Captain Lorca begrudgingly obliges and orders the ship to warp to Starbase 46, but since the instructions came from that Vulcan admiral there’s no reason to think that Lorca is actually going to do what he’s told, of course. Why start now?

Bond Franchise Reportedly Finds New Domestic Distributor

MGM is reportedly teaming up with Annapurna for the domestic release of James Bond 25.

As reported by Deadline, the deal should be finalized this week. Annapurna’s Erik Lomis and Marc Weinstock will handle domestic distribution and marketing, respectively, with the oversight of MGM’s Gary Barber and producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

This isn’t the first time Lomis and Weinstock have been involved with the Bond franchise. Weinstock handled marketing for a couple of the Bond movies while he was at Sony Pictures, and Lomis was previously involved with distribution at MGM.

Final Fantasy XV’s Noctis Coming to Tekken 7

Final Fantasy XV protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum will join Tekken 7 as a playable fighter in spring 2018.

Bandai Namco released a trailer that showcases Noctis battling against various members of the Tekken 7 roster, with his iconic Engine Blade in hand. Check out the video in the player above to see the crown prince of Lucis in action.

Noctis isn’t the only post-launch addition to the Tekken 7 roster. Earlier this year, it was announced that the iconic SNK fighter Geese Howard, from the Fatal Fury series, is coming to Tekken 7 this winter.

Tekken 7 was released earlier this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For our thoughts on why the latest entry in Bandai Namco’s popular fighting franchise “is a hallmark fighting game that’s both accessible and highly technical,” read IGN’s Tekken 7 review.

Tekken 7’s Next DLC Character Is Final Fantasy 15’s Noctis

The next Tekken 7 DLC character has been announced–and it’s a surprising one. Bandai Namco today announced that Final Fantasy XV‘s Noctis Lucis Caelum is coming to the fighting game in Spring 2018.

As you can see in the announcement trailer below, Noctis wields his trademark Engine Blade to do a lot of up-close-and-personal damage. He can also use magic. Additionally, you can see that there is also apparently a new Final Fantasy XV stage coming to Tekken 7 with Noctis. Check out the trailer above.

People on Twitter are basically losing their minds over the announcement that Noctis is coming to Tekken 7. The announcement came less than a day after NetherRealm announced that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming to Injustice 2 as DLC characters. People didn’t see that reveal coming, either.

Tekken 7 is out now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. While Noctis isn’t coming to the game until 2018, Geese Howard, from the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters franchises, is launching in December–you can see some new gameplay footage here.

For more on Tekken 7, you can read our Tekken 7 review in which GameSpot’s own Peter Brown awarded it an 8/10 and stated, “While some of this depth will be lost or out of reach for newcomers, there’s enough fun to be had outside of hardcore competition to keep players from all walks of gaming thoroughly entertained.”

Call Of Duty: WW2 Drops Dedicated Servers Temporarily To Improve Online Experience

Call of Duty: World War II launched earlier this month, but its release was not totally smooth, with players reporting online and multiplayer issues. In a blog post today, developer Sledgehammer thanked fans for their support amid what has been a “whirlwind” launch. Despite the issues, the game has welcomed “millions” of players already, Sledgehammer said.

“Our highest priority is to deliver the best online experience possible. We’re not there yet, and we won’t rest until we are,” the studio said. “Our entire team is working around the clock, and we would like to share our current status update.”

The update released last week had an adverse effect on server performance, Sledgehammer said. In response to this, Sledgehammer dropped the dedicated servers and switched to a P2P setup. This has helped improve things, but a P2P setup means players may experience host migration and other annoying little things. Dedicated servers are preferred, and fans may be happy to know that Sledgehammer aims to bring them back in due course; doing so is the studio’s “highest priority.”

In fact, Sledgehammer is already testing dedicated servers in “limited markets” such as some places in the United States. “This level of data and diagnostics is helping us work toward a permanent solution as quickly as possible,” Sledgehammer said. “We’ve begun to test dedicated servers today in the US. We’ll watch this test closely, and once we analyze the results we’ll look to expand.”

Sledgehammer also discussed another issue that players have been running into: getting disconnected from the server. The studio has found the root cause of the problem, and a patch is coming out tonight on PS4 and Xbox One to fix the issue. This is a big deal because getting disconnected can mean the loss of stats and other problemes.

Additionally, Sledgehammer confirmed that Call of Duty: WWII’s Headquarters mode–a social space like Destiny’s Tower–is still not functioning as intended. It is supposed to be a social area where lots of players come together, but last week, Sledgehammer made it a solo experience to help improve the online experience. Unfortunately, it’s still a solo experience (though you can manually invite friends), and that’s not changing for some time.

“HQ is best enjoyed with a thriving, fully populated social community interacting together,” Sledgehammer said. “So hang in there while we address the most pressing concerns first.”

Finally, Sledgehammer said PC fans should know that the studio is listening to their feedback. The next title update for PC is finished, but Sledgehammer is not going to release it until it can fix the other issues mentioned above, a portion of which also impact the PC audience.

“This is only the beginning, so thank you for playing,” Sledgehammer said. “We won’t rest until we resolve everything we can for the community.”

Walking Dead: How THAT Tragedy Compares to Comics

Full spoilers for The Walking Dead continue below. Make sure to read IGN’s review of “Some Guy.”

Four episodes into The Walking Dead’s eighth season and we’ve come back around to a memorable moment from Robert Kirkman’s comic series – a failed assault and the death of Shiva, who rushed into a swarm of zombies in order to save Ezekiel’s life.

The season started out mirroring the “All Out War” arc from the comics, but then did its own thing for a few chapters – including the return of Season 1’s Morales. Now, after weeks of winning (and smiling), the King has fallen on hard times, losing just about every member of his squad (except Jerry and Carol) along with his precious pet. Let’s see how things went down in the comics compared to the scenes in this week’s “Some Guy.”

The Walking Dead: “Some Guy” Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

In Walking Dead’s strongest chapter of Season 8 so far (though it wasn’t without flaws), Ezekiel’s weeks of boasting and bravado caught up with him in the worst way when 95% of his squad (save for two characters we actually knew, and liked) got mowed down at the hands of some Saviors with M2 .50 caliber machine guns.

It was the biggest setback of Rick’s attack plan to date and definitely the biggest moment for Ezekiel to date, as a character. You might have known something like this was coming if you’d read the comics (though not for certain, since the show doesn’t always adapt everything) OR you could have just seen it coming because Ezekiel, basically, has been daring doom to rain down on him and his entire crew since the season premiere. All his smiling, bragging, quoting of Henry V, and proclamations that no one on his team would die could only really lead to a horrific end. So it was easy enough to telegraph. Still, Ezekiel losing his entire army of skilled warriors, who’d placed their unwavering faith in him, was damn effective – even if it involved losing a lot of characters we didn’t know or grieve over.
