Netflix’s Locke And Key: 31 Comics And Horror Easter Eggs In Episode 1
Locke and Key spoilers ahead!

After over a decade of anticipation, we finally have a live-action Locke and Key adaptation, and lo and behold, it’s streaming on Netflix right now. That’s right, Locke and Key is out now–you can watch all ten episodes this weekend, if you want to.
Granted, if you’re here reading this, you probably already have–and you want to know more about all the juicy Easter eggs and references Locke and Key Season 1 contains. The series is an adaptation of the comic books of the same name, created by writer Joe Hill and illustrator Gabriel Rodriguez. The show follows the Locke family as they move into their family’s ancestral home, Keyhouse, following a family tragedy, and discover magical keys that unlock powerful abilities. And besides all the references back to the comics, there are tons of Easter eggs for diehard fans of the series, and of horror in general.
The show’s first episode has by far the most Easter eggs of the whole series, and this page will focus on those. Be warned, though–this guide may cover only the first episode, but we’ll discuss events from throughout the series. Consider this your spoiler warning. If you’ve watched beyond Episode 1, you can also check out Easter eggs from Episodes 2-5.
Are you a fan of the comics, the show, or both? Let us know which Easter eggs and references are your favorites in the comments below. Then check out the latest Locke and Key news–from the fact that work on Season 2 has already begun, to Joe Hill’s recent announcement of a new Locke and Key one-shot issue.

1. Mark’s drawings

The show’s introduction to Mark Cho happens very quickly, and it will be several episodes before we find out what’s going on here. But if you look closely as the camera pans over his documents, you can see plenty of interesting things, including blueprints for Keyhouse, the omega symbol, and even drawings of the Animal Key, Angel Key, and Skin Key, which are from the comics but don’t actually appear in Season 1 of the show.
2. Matchstick Key

The Matchstick Key Mark uses to self-immolate in the opening scene is an invention of the show, and not one from the comics.
3. Playing Fortnite

In the scene during which we meet the Lockes, Bode mentions that he plays Fortnite with his friends. It’s a bit incongruous in retrospect, since he never mentions Fortnite or any other video game again throughout the season (besides the version of Spyro in his head)–especially considering the fact that Fortnite is an online game and he could definitely still play it with his friends if he wanted to.
4. “No one likes the smell of paint”

Nina remarks that “no one likes the smell of paint.” This line is similar to dialogue in the comics, although it has slightly different context in the show; in the books, Rendell was painting a house when Sam shot him, while in the Netflix version, Nina was also painting a canvas.
5. Kinsey’s bracelet

In Scot’s introductory scene, he remarks that he likes Kinsey’s bracelet. As comics readers know at this point, that bracelet will become very important later on: Rendell hid the Anywhere Key in it.
6. “Welcome to Matheson”

Scot’s line “Welcome to Matheson” echoes the name of the first volume of the comics: “Welcome to Lovecraft.” In the books, author Joe Hill named the town after horror author H.P. Lovecraft, while in the show the name was changed to reference horror author Richard Matheson instead.
7. “A little more Norman Bates”

Tyler is referencing the classic horror film Psycho, in which the mentally ill murderer Norman Bates lived in a large house overlooking his motel. The movie was adapted into a show on A&E that ran five seasons–and that show was produced by none other than Locke and Key co-showrunner and executive producer Carlton Cuse.
8. The Ghost Door

There’s a good reason the camera lingers so long on this door as Duncan gives the first tour of Keyhouse: That’s the Ghost Door, which comes into play later. Notice the skeletons carved in bas-relief in the wood.
9. The Grandfather Clock

It doesn’t come into play this season, but the Grandfather Clock in Keyhouse’s foyer is important in the comics–with help from the Timeshift Key, it allows Kinsey and Tyler to become time-traveling voyeurs and view events from Keyhouse’s past. This expository tool has been partially replaced in the show by the ability to view memories using the Head Key.
10. The portrait gallery

During the tour of Keyhouse, Duncan mentions that Devin Locke “still holds the high score on the Galaga machine at Stan’s Pizza in town.” This is definitely a joke, but just in case you’re unaware, Galaga is a real arcade game first released in 1981. In addition, the names that Duncan gives the other portrait subjects are all jokes or references: Snooki is from Jersey Shore, Buzz Lightyear is from Toy Story, Lemon Jell-O is, um, a flavor of Jell-O, and Phoebe, Chandler, and Monica are characters from the sitcom Friends. Lastly, the Loch Ness monster is a mythical creature that is said to live in Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. As Bode points out, that one’s not even spelled the same.
11. Omega

It doesn’t come up until later in the show, but eagle-eyed viewers can catch a glimpse of the Omega symbol on Sam’s arm in this flashback.
12. A key

There are key shapes hidden throughout Locke and Key’s production design. Bode’s first glance down into the well is a good example.
13. Bode’s school?

At breakfast, Kinsey mentions that Bode doesn’t need to start school for another week. However, throughout the show’s first season, which definitely takes place over more than a single week, Bode simply never goes to school. Weird, right?
14. Keys to the Kingdom

When Duncan hands Nina the keys to Keyhouse, he calls them “the keys to the proverbial kingdom.” The fourth volume of the comics is called “Keys to the Kingdom.”
15. Miss you Brian

During Nina and Duncan’s conversation you can catch a reference to Brian, Duncan’s partner. In the books, Brian plays a somewhat important role at one point, but other than mentions like this he hasn’t appeared in the show yet.
16. Peace Among Worlds

When Bode catches Duncan flipping Keyhouse off, Duncan tells his nephew that the middle finger can also mean “goodbye.” This is similar to a Rick and Morty joke in which Rick has taught an entire miniature civilization that flipping the bird means “peace among worlds.”
17. “Your invitation to Hogwarts isn’t coming”

Locke and Key’s similarities to Harry Potter are noteworthy–talented children with a dead parent discover magical powers and begin attending a new boarding school where they rope their friends into dangerous hijinks–and the show acknowledges that with a little Hogwarts joke in the first episode.
18. Scot Ka-who?

Scot’s name has been slightly altered from the comics, from Scot Kavanaugh to Scot Cavendish.
19. “Me and my droogs”

Scot initially refers to the Savini Squad as his “droogs,” a reference to A Clockwork Orange, in which Malcolm McDowell’s character Alex leads a small gang of thugs who he refers to as his droogs.
20. The Savini Squad

The Savini Squad is named after Tom Savini, a pioneering horror makeup artist, director, stunt performer, and actor well known for his work on horror classics including Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Creepshow, Monkey Shines, Friday the 13th, Maniac, The Burning, The Prowler, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
21. The Shining tribute

The shot where the camera follows Bode as he rides his wheeled Heelys through the house is an homage to similar shots following Danny on his tricycle in the horror classic The Shining, which was based on a book by Locke and Key comics author Joe Hill’s father, Stephen King.
22. Tarantino Tribute?

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino always includes plenty of Easter eggs and small details in his films. One that recurs in almost all his movies is the use of real cereal brands, sometimes in the background of shots, sometimes featured more prominently. This shot of Bode eating Froot Loops might be a subtle Tarantino tribute–or maybe, just really expensive product placement.
23. The Keys

When Bode returns to the well house to chat with his “echo” again, she tells him about some of the keys that will play a part throughout the season, including the Ghost Key, the Identity Key, and the Anywhere Key.
24. The whispering

As the Locke siblings discover, the keys whisper to them to be found. As those who have read the comics know, that’s because they’re made of something called “whispering iron,” the origin of which is revealed late in the books.
25. The photograph

This photograph features many characters who viewers will get to know through memories and flashbacks over the course of the season, including Lucas, Erin Voss, Ellie Whedon, and Mark Cho. There’s a similar picture featured in the comics, but it’s from the group’s rendition of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, a performance that they infamously enhanced using the magic of the keys.
26. Doritos are important

OK, you know what, Bode’s assertion that “Doritos are important in [his] world” definitely makes all these food brand references just seem like prominent product placement, and not subtle references to Tarantino movies.
27. Wizard of Oz, Ninja Turtles, and Golden Girls

The Savini Squad members list several teams of four to try and make Kinsey feel better about intruding on their club, including Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz; Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael in the Ninja Turtles; and Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia of the Golden Girls.
28. “Final girls don’t hide”

Scot’s assertion that “final girls don’t hide” is a reference to the “final girl” trope found in many horror movies–no matter how many teenagers head to the remote cabin in the woods or conduct the satanic ritual at the beginning, only one girl will be left by the movie’s end. When he refers to the “final girl scale of zero to Jamie Lee,” he’s talking about Jamie Lee Curtis’s role in the Halloween franchise. That said, many horror fans likely won’t agree with Scot’s assertion, since hiding is often exactly how final girls manage to live so long. In fact, it’s a pretty weird thing to say, all things considered.
29. Midnight

There are multiple other somewhat confusing references in this scene. The squad is discussing Day of the Dead, but the movie they’re actually watching is John Russo’s 1982 horror movie Midnight, which featured Melanie Verlin in the role of Nancy.
30. Mirror Key

The Mirror Key is another new key created just for the show. It traps users in a mirror world–“the prison of the self,” according to Dodge–from which it’s difficult to escape.
31. Some old corpse

Keyhouse and its magical keys have been around for a long time. As Dodge points out to Bode, many people have died inside the Mirror Key’s “prison of the self.” Tyler glimpses one of these victims, with a tricorn hat nearby providing an idea of when they died.
Blizzard: ‘It’s Been a Bit of a Hard Week’ With Warcraft 3: Reforged
Blizzard’s president has acknowledged that it’s been a tough week for the developer following the launch of Warcraft 3: Reforged due to the criticism from the community the game received.
During the Activision Blizzard earnings call held on February 6, 2020, Blizzard president J. Allen Brack answered a question about the criticism that Warcraft 3: Reforged drew from players since its launch on January 28, 2020.
“Honestly, it’s been a bit of a hard week,” Brack said. “Our community has come to expect really amazing things from us, and we’ve heard from them that we did not achieve that bar.”
[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/05/warcraft-3-reforged-review”]
Warcraft 3: Reforged was criticised by players for a number of reasons. Cutscenes don’t feature cinematic camera angles that were promised, some have reported connectivity issues, while others are disappointed at the lack of a competitive ladder.
Another issue is a change to Blizzard’s End User License Agreement that gives Blizzard complete copyright of custom games made in Reforged. If anyone comes up with a great game idea in Reforged then they aren’t able to take it out of there and turn it into a standalone game without Blizzard’s permission.
“But we stand behind our games, and have consistently shown that not only do we support them, but we continue to build on them even after launch, and we’re committed to doing that here as well,” Brack continued. “And so we’re going to continue to update the game, and we’ll continue to update the community with our plans going forward.”
Warcraft 3: Reforged received its first post-launch update today, which comes in at 2GB in total. However, it doesn’t make any huge changes to the game, mostly fixing bugs and addressing some issues with the game’s Classic mode.
[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”legacyId=20090999&captions=true”]
Blizzard has also changed its refund policy for Warcraft 3: Reforged, at least for now. Rather than having to wait for Blizzard to review each refund application, players can now ask for a refund through the support system and get it automatically, or near enough.
We gave the game a 7 in our Warcraft 3: Reforged review, saying that it’s “an uninspiring remaster, but Warcraft 3 itself is still a great game nearly two decades later.”

Hit Mystery Film Knives Out Is Officially Getting A Sequel
Fans of Daniel Craig and ludicrous Southern accents rejoice: Rian Johnson’s critically-acclaimed whodunit is getting a follow-up. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer announced the sequel as part of the company’s third-quarter earnings call. The film picked up critical buzz following its release late last year, which has translated into a strong box-office performance, with a worldwide gross quickly approaching the $300 million mark.
Best-known for directing the sharply-divisive Star Wars entry The Last Jedi, Johnson had already indicated in interviews that he wanted to make a follow-up to Knives Out, with Craig’s gentlemen detective Benoit Blanc taking on a new case. Feltheimer also hinted that Lionsgate feels that the film has franchise potential.
In our Knives Out review, Rafael Motamayor praised the movie as a “razor-sharp deconstruction of the whodunit genre.” The film isn’t Johnson’s only foray into the genre–his directorial debut Brick played with the conventions of mystery fiction, with a more hard-boiled twist. As for Craig, you can see him in the upcoming Bond flick No Time to Die, which comes to theatres in April.
Diablo 3 PTR Patch With New Class Sets Now Available
Diablo 3 has released its latest patch for public testing, letting you dabble with some new class sets. If you’re in the public test realm on PC, you can try out the new sets for Barbarian, Witch Doctor, and Wizard, among other changes in the 2.6.8 update.
Barbarian’s “Horde of Ninety Savages” class set boosts Frenzy, the Witch Doctor gets “Mundunugu’s Regalia” to change its Spirit Barrage ability, and the Wizard’s “Typhon’s Veil” maks changes to the Hydra ability. Blizzard also noted that it added extra Legendaries to round out the new builds. If you want to help test the new sets, Blizzard recommends focusing on one during the limited time, rather than trying to dabble in all three.
In addition to these class sets, the patch is introducing a new Season 20 Theme, Season of the Forbidden Archives. That theme will be accompanied by a revised Kanai’s Cube that removes many of its usual restrictions. The focus is on letting players boost their own power level rather than focus on environmental effects. Playing Season 20 will earn a new pet and portrait frame.
Blizzard has been updating Diablo 3 regularly with new class sets, updates, and other items to collect, along with seasonal challenges. Meanwhile, the company is working on Diablo 4, and just brought in a notable name to help steer the Diablo franchise: former Gears of War head Rod Fergusson.
Diablo 3 PTR Patch 2.68
General
- Infernal Machines and Organs are now subject to vacuum pick-up
- Crafting plans from Bounty Caches are now guaranteed to drop unless all plans have been learned
Seasons
- A new Season Theme has been added for Season 20, the Season of the Forbidden Archives:
- For the duration of Season 20, all slots in Kanai’s Cube will be able to select Legendary powers from Weapon, Armor, or Jewelry
- This means you could select three Armor powers, three Weapon powers, three Jewelery powers, or any other combination thereof across all categories
- Items are not self-additive or multiplicative (meaning, you cannot stack multiples of the same item’s power)
- Once the Season has ended and characters roll over to Non-Season, players will have all currently active powers in their Kanai’s Cube reset
- Developer’s Note: As we outlined in our Developer Insight blog, we want to continue to get creative (and maybe a little crazy) with the Season Themes and powers we add to the game. We heard from some players that they preferred themes that made your character directly feel more powerful rather than needing to focus on the environment around you. If that describes you, then the Season of Forbidden Archives should be right up your alley, and we’re really interested to see how this changes the game for Season 20.
- For the duration of Season 20, all slots in Kanai’s Cube will be able to select Legendary powers from Weapon, Armor, or Jewelry
- Two new Seasonal rewards are available for players who fully complete the Season 20 Journey, including a new portrait frame and pet
Classes
- Crusader
- Heaven’s Fury
- The animation for the Fires of Heaven rune can no longer be cancelled early.
- Heaven’s Fury
Items
- Developer’s Note: With Patch 2.6.8, we’re adding three(!) new class sets with similar goals to those we included in the previous patch. Each set was designed primarily with boosting long-requested skills and play styles we lifted directly from community feedback. Frenzy, Spirit Barrage, and Hydra were requests that offered a lot of opportunity for gameplay exploration, and we’re looking forward to seeing what players do with these new tools at their disposal. Additional changes to associated supplemental Legendaries have been included to round out these builds. It is critical when providing feedback on these sets to include whether or not you were using the Season 20 buff during your testing; while feedback of any kind is welcome, we’re especially interested in Non-Seasonal testing as that will better reflect the long-term performance of these sets.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Eshop Pre-Orders Open, Eligible For Vouchers
Animal Crossing: New Horizons‘ release date is quickly approaching–the highly anticipated game will launch March 20, 2020 exclusively on Nintendo Switch. Physical pre-orders for New Horizons have been available for a while, but the new Animal Crossing game has finally arrived on the Switch Eshop, meaning you can now pre-order your copy digitally. And if you’ve been holding onto one of Nintendo’s game vouchers from last year, you’re in luck, because Animal Crossing: New Horizons is also eligible for that offer.
Nintendo’s game voucher program was rolled out last year, offering two vouchers for $100 USD / £84 / AU$134.95. Assuming you redeem the vouchers on two full-price Nintendo Switch games, you could save yourself $20 / £16 / AU$24.95 overall. It was a great deal considering first-party Switch games just don’t drop below list price when they’re brand-new, and you could redeem the vouchers any two eligible games, from Pokemon Sword and Shield and Luigi’s Mansion 3 to Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Unfortunately, vouchers are no longer available to be purchased in the United States or Australia, so hopefully you took advantage of the promotion last year.
If you want to redeem your voucher on Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you can do so in the Nintendo Switch Eshop, or on Nintendo.com if you’re in the US or Canada. The newly released Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore was just added to the list of eligible titles as well, if you have more than one voucher saved up.
If you prefer to pre-order a physical copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Best Buy is offering $10 reward credit as well as a Tom Nook peel-and-stick accessory with all purchases. There’s also a wide range of Animal Crossing: New Horizons merchandise, including some very cute Animal Crossing Switch controllers, available to pre-order now.
GTA 5 Tops PS4’s January Charts on the PlayStation Store
Despite first releasing in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V continues to sell like it’s a brand-new game. It managed to top the U.S. PlayStation Store’s January charts, beating out the likes of the new Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Madden NFL 20.
Those games were joined on the PS4 charts by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition, which has seen a surge in popularity since The Witcher debuted on Netflix. It has also experienced renewed success on PC, where its player count has even risen past where it was at launch. Star Wars Battlefront II, Minecraft, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and EA Sports UFC 3 all managed to crack the top 10, as well.
On the PlayStation VR side, the biggest games continue to perform well. Beat Saber and Superhot VR led the pack, with Job Simulator and Arizona Sunshine also included. Though none of these games are new, they’re certainly among the most-polished titles available on the platform.

Bungie Is Reworking Destiny 2’s Swords Entirely In Season 10 To Make Them Stand Out More
Bungie is starting to tease some of the big gameplay changes in store for the next season of Destiny 2, which is set to kick off in just a few weeks. Swords are the first item on the list, and Bungie is completely reworking what role they will play in combat.
Previously, swords occupied the same space as shotguns, slotting into the close-quarters, high-damage role making them almost interchangeable. Bungie wants to shake this up, primarily by giving players more flexibility when it comes to how swords consume ammunition, and how that ties into the new sword energy meter.
Sword energy will replace your melee meter when you have a sword quipped, slowly recharging over time in the same way. Although you will still consume ammunition when attacking, this energy will be used when initiating a heavy attack. The more energy you have, the stronger the attack, adding more nuance to previous strategies that just relied on getting up closing and mashing attack as fast as possible.
Energy will also be consumed when guarding. Although you’ll still need at least one ammo to start a guard, each stance and damage resistance type will now only drain your energy in different ways without consuming any ammunition. The changes were influenced by how Stronghold, a Titan exotic from Season of the Drifter, influenced the otherwise unused guarding mechanic. Bungie have now applied its influence across the board, but promise that Stronghold will be adapted accordingly so that it still feels unique.
Light attacks won’t consume energy at all, but have been reworked to allow for the standard three hit combos to loop indefinitely now too. Bungie hopes that this will leave players less open at the end of combos, while also adding to other changes to give all sword a “hack and slash” feel.
A detailed breakdown of all the changes to swords can be read in Bungie’s weekly Destiny 2 update, which includes details about Crimson Days, a patch note preview for Season 10, and more.
Sanders Goes After Pete’s Backing From Wealthy Donors
Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards Is Working On A New Sci-Fi Movie
Gareth Edwards, the director of the first Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One, has found his latest sci-fi project. He’ll be working on a new movie at New Regency.
The untitled project will be written and directed by Edwards, according to Variety. He’ll be joined by Kiri Hart as producer, who had that same role on Rogue One.
Details are scarce, but Edwards’ latest project will be a sci-fi movie taking place in the near-future. This is an original idea, and casting is reportedly already underway. The film may start production as early as this summer.
This will be the fourth feature film under Edwards’ belt, and also the fourth sci-film as well. Edwards got his feature start with the 2010 movie Monsters–which he also wrote–then the American Godzilla reboot four years later.
New Regency has a good track record with sci-fi films recently. In 2017, the production company released A Cure For Wellness, a bizarre thriller with a mild sci-fi bent about a business man trying to retrieve his boss from a recovery center. In the process, the man slowly starts to lose his mind. Additionally, New Regency has produced 2011’s In Time and 2006’s The Fountain.
However, the production studio really nailed it with last year’s Ad Astra. Starring Brad Pitt, the film followed an astronaut in the near future who goes on a journey to recover his father from a space station halfway across the galaxy.
