Yemen separatists ‘take most of port city’

Yemeni separatists have taken almost full control of the southern port city of Aden after days of fighting with government forces, residents say.

PM Ahmed bin Daghar and members of his cabinet are believed to be holed up inside the presidential palace in Aden.

There are reports of talks between the southern separatists and government forces, who were previously allies.

The fighting opens up a new front in Yemen, splitting the alliance against Houthi rebels in the north.

It has already led to the deaths of 40 people since Sunday, the Red Cross says.

The separatists are also reported to have also seized Aden’s military bases.

Yemen’s internationally-recognised government relocated to Aden in 2015, when President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi and his cabinet were forced to flee the capital, Sanaa, following an offensive by the Houthis.

A assault on Sanaa prompted a Saudi-led multinational coalition to launch a military campaign to defeat the rebels. Since then, more than 9,245 people have been killed and 3 million displaced, according to the UN.

Why are the separatists and government fighting?

Supporters of two sides have fought alongside each other over the past three years but it has always seemed an uneasy alliance.

Before the conflict, separatist sentiment had been running high in the south, which was an independent state before unification with the North in 1990.

Although the separatists were suspicious of Mr Hadi – who is a southerner but supports continued unity with the north – they joined forces to prevent the Houthis capturing Aden and drive them out of most of the south. However, tensions between the two sides remained.

The situation was made more complex by divisions within the Saudi-led coalition. Saudi Arabia backs Mr Hadi, who is based in Riyadh, while the United Arab Emirates – a key partner in the coalition – is closely aligned with the separatists.

How did the clashes in Aden start?

They erupted on Sunday after the expiry of a deadline set by the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) for a cabinet reshuffle, including the removal of Mr Bin Daghar.

The council accused the government of “rampant corruption” resulting in a “deteriorating economic, security and social situation never before witnessed in the history of the south”.

The fighting, which has involved tanks and heavy artillery, began in the eastern Khor Maksar district, where the airport located. It quickly spread to the southern Crater district, near presidential palace, and the hills overlooking the sea port.

As the separatists took control of official facilities and military bases, the prime minister denounced what he called a “coup”. President Hadi, who is based in Riyadh, ordered his forces to secure Aden.

What’s the latest?

By Tuesday morning, the separatists were said to have seized the last stronghold of the Presidential Guards force in the northern Dar Saad district and reached the presidential palace, where Mr bin Daghar is based.

Sources close to the southern separatists told Reuters that negotiations were under way to allow Mr bin Daghar’s government to leave the city safely, but a government source said the prime minister had no intention of leaving.

Meanwhile, Save the Children has announced it is suspending all humanitarian work, citing security reasons.

“Our staff are forced to shelter at home and in bunkers while gun battles rage outside,” the charity’s director in Yemen Temer Kirolos said.

What’s being done to end the fighting?

The Saudi-led coalition urged both sides to cease hostilities on Tuesday. “The coalition will take all the measures it deems necessary to restore stability and security in Aden,” a statement said.

The US, which is supporting the coalition’s campaign against the Houthis, expressed concern and called “for dialogue among all parties in Aden to reach a political solution”.

“The Yemeni people are already facing a dire humanitarian crisis. Additional divisions and violence within Yemen will only increase their suffering,” it added.

The UN’s interim humanitarian co-ordinator in Yemen, Stephen Anderson, said the violence was having a negative impact on its operations across the south of the country.

“Humanitarian movements within the city have been suspended and aid workers remain in lockdown in their residences, unable to continue critical life-saving activities,” he warned.

New Overwatch Update Nerfs Mercy And Junkrat; Patch Notes Released

Blizzard has released a new update for Overwatch, and it implements some of the balance changes we’ve heard about recently. Specifically, it targets both Mercy and Junkrat for nerfs, while also introducing a nice new feature for those playing the game on Xbox One X.

The biggest change in the new patch, which is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, targets Mercy’s Resurrect ability. As game director Jeff Kaplan explained in a recent developer update, Blizzard has been concerned with the impact it has, particularly when used in conjunction with her Ultimate, Valkyrie. Now, when her Ultimate is active, Resurrect is no longer instant, and you don’t gain a bonus Resurrect charge. Additionally, Valkyrie now only lasts 15 seconds (down from 20), and the speed bonus that Guardian Angel gets has been reduced by 50%.

“Mercy’s recent Resurrect changes have helped in allowing enemies to have more counter play in dealing with her, but she was able to use Resurrect through Valkyrie enough to largely mitigate the impact of the previous changes,” Blizzard explained on its official forums. “Additionally, we’re toning back the amount of mobility Valkyrie provides through Guardian Angel and reducing its duration to overall reduce the power of this ability.”

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7

As for Junkrat, his Concussion Mine now has damage falloff. In other words, it deals less damage to targets further away from the mine than those who are closer to it. Blizzard said, “Junkrat has been enjoying the flexibility his double-charge Concussion Mine provides, but it has now become a bit too easy to throw out huge bursts of damage in a large area. With this change he can still dish out similar damage but he must now be more accurate with his tosses.”

Also in this patch, the Xbox One version introduces 4K support for those playing on an Xbox One X. There are also new pre-order bonuses for purchasing World of Warcraft‘s Battle for Azeroth expansion available, which you can see in the gallery above. The only other change is a bug fix involving D.Va’s Black Cat skin; her face and hair textures should now load properly. Possible changes to Symmetra, Mei, and Hanzo are not included in the update. The full patch notes follow at the bottom of this post.

This update is now live on all platforms. We don’t yet know when it’s coming, but a Lunar New Year event is on the way, as are several other returning events. Overwatch recently added the new Blizzard World map, as well as a bunch of new skins and cosmetics that can be obtained through the base loot box.

Overwatch Patch Notes

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth Pre-purchase Goodies

When you pre-purchase a Digital Deluxe version of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth you’ll receive several Warcraft-themed goodies in Overwatch. Show your faction pride on the battlefields of tomorrow with emotes for Tracer; Horde- and Alliance-themed voice lines for Torbjörn; Anduin, Jaina, Sylvanas, and Saurfang sprays; and Kul Tiras and Zandalar player icons.

General Updates

General

  • [XB1] Added 4K support for Xbox One X

Hero Updates

Junkrat

  • Concussion Mine
    • Now will deal less damage to targets farther away from the explosion’s center

Developer Comments: Junkrat has been enjoying the flexibility his double-charge Concussion Mine provides, but it has now become a bit too easy to throw out huge bursts of damage in a large area. With this change he can still dish out similar damage but he must now be more accurate with his tosses.

Mercy

  • Valkyrie
    • No longer makes Resurrect instant
    • No longer grants a bonus Resurrect charge
    • The speed bonus Guardian Angel receives when activating Valkyrie has been decreased by 50%
    • Duration reduced from 20 seconds to 15 seconds

Developer Comments: Mercy’s recent Resurrect changes have helped in allowing enemies to have more counter play in dealing with her, but she was able to use Resurrect through Valkyrie enough to largely mitigate the impact of the previous changes. Additionally, we’re toning back the amount of mobility Valkyrie provides through Guardian Angel and reducing its duration to overall reduce the power of this ability.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Review: The Fast And The Furious

Despite the countless Dragon Ball games that have appeared since the manga debuted in the mid-’80s, the series has never needed them to sustain its popularity. Most are forgettable, some are good, and even fewer are truly great. Thanks to developer Arc System Works’ particular talents, Dragon Ball FighterZ is one of the great ones, if not the best yet. Even if you think Dragon Ball is old hat, and even if you’re intimidated by fighting games, there’s a good chance you’ll be drawn into the explosive action and personalities that expertly evoke the anime’s infectious spirit.

Arc’s prowess for making 3D assets look like 2D cel animation is as strong as ever, and its artists display a clear understanding of Dragon Ball’s characteristic details. The screen is constantly filled with saturated colors and special effects, and super attacks are framed in a way that pull you out of the fight and into a momentary state of awe. Whether still or in motion, FighterZ’s art looks like Dragon Ball at its very best, adhering closely to the standards set by the series creator, Akira Toriyama. And no matter how you may have watched the show, the option to choose between Japanese and English voice acting makes it easy to feel connected to the events on-screen.

Within the convincing Dragon Ball shell lives a fast-paced 3v3 tag-team fighting game that will feel familiar to Marvel vs. Capcom 3 veterans. But despite a few familiar parallels, FighterZ is distinctly Dragon Ball. Characters can jet through the air in a flash at any time, toss energy blasts like it’s nothing, and unleash a flurry of smaller punches and kicks to stagger a hesitant opponent. Every fighter emphatically shouts at the top of their lungs (in a good way) every few seconds while attacking, and you understand why: these super beings are incredibly powerful, and FighterZ translates that energy to the screen perfectly. It also makes it easy for anyone to tap into that power, with relatively short special attack lists and one-button or two-button activations for universal mechanics. Not that it’s recommended, but you can theoretically play with one hand and capably close the distance to your opponent to kick their ass in style regardless of the character you choose–all without any directional inputs.

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

Like any great fighting game, FighterZ doesn’t lose depth just because it’s accessible. Super attacks and teleports are easy to pull off, but they come with timing and combo conditions that allow for expert-level analysis and strategic play. It’s also important to properly manage the lone meter that fuels most of your special abilities, a setup that makes a fighter’s next move more unpredictable than usual, compared to some games with multiple, ability-specific meters. With seven levels of charge that feed into both offensive and defensive moves, it’s never exactly clear what someone will do next, but you know a full meter means trouble, and a potentially chaotic back and forth between two crack fighters.

It also means fun is just seconds away. Being that it’s so simple to cover ground, participate in mechanical mind games, and look impressive while doing it, there’s practically no barrier to enjoyment provided you are fighting with opponents of a similar skill level. When the balance of skill in your opponent’s favor, with no means of escaping a combo once you’re trapped, there are times when you have to accept fate and wait for them to finish their onslaught–or until your current character dies–again, not unlike MvC3. Thankfully, online matchmaking is set up to auto-match you with players of similar experience, and lopsided fights are (so far, based on the open beta) few and far between.

You also don’t need to be an aspiring online competitor to enjoy FighterZ, as it includes a significant story mode that can last a dozen hours or more if you seek out every possible cutscene. While a bit drawn out in places and relatively easy until the conclusion, it’s still a treat for Dragon Ball fans with plenty of new vignettes staring classic characters. Though the plot is split into three arcs, you are technically seeing one arc from different perspectives, with a few alternate events to keep things interesting.

The gist is that a bunch of clones of the planet’s strongest fighters are running amok, Dragon Ball heroes and villains (some who have been resurrected from death) must work together to stop them, and a new character, Android 21, is somehow at the center of it all. Because there’s practically zero time spent introducing you to characters or their world, it’s difficult to imagine how a newcomer to Dragon Ball would understand things like the Ginyu Force’s proclivity to pose dramatically or the reason why Krillin doesn’t have a nose, let alone the broad concepts of Super Saiyans and Dragon Balls. Then again, the mix of oddball antics and hyper-serious face-offs is inherently appealing for the confident cartoon expression on display.

As in combat, Arc’s capable design skills make the 3D models and environments in cutscenes look stunningly close to actual 2D animation. There are moments when it feels like you’re watching a new episode of Dragon Ball Z. But there’s a catch: you’re forced to press a button to advance dialogue, rather than allowed to kick back and watch the show. When FighterZ gets achingly close to recreating the look of the anime, the forced interaction feels like a step in the wrong direction, albeit a minor one in the grand scheme of things. Generally speaking, story sequences often elicit a smile or a laugh, only occasionally feeling like filler made to advance the story. One of the most strange yet likable qualities is the way the game contextualizes you, the player: a spirit that has randomly inhabited Goku (or another character depending on the arc in question) and can be passed to other fighters. It’s unexpected and weird, but you have to give Arc System Works credit for pulling you into the room as opposed to simply breaking the fourth wall.

FighterZ is complex and distinct enough to be enjoyed by fighting game competitors, but there’s no question that it’s been designed to tap into the hearts of Dragon Ball’s most dedicated fans…

Story mode’s only real downfall is how repetitive it becomes–you fight clones of only a portion of the game’s overall roster ad nauseam. Each chapter is presented like a map with locations connected by a branching path. In order to get to the chapter boss, you have to navigate the board and pick and choose your fights along the way. Given that there are optional pathways in each chapter and that you can concoct your own team, it’s not surprising to learn that there are optional cutscenes to unlock depending on these conditions. Despite the rewards being largely enjoyable, after a handful of hours fighting lackluster opponents, the idea of replaying story chapters to see a quirky character interaction is unfortunately one that’s easy to sideline.

Similarly, the game’s basic, small overworld feels unnecessary even though it attempts to add value. Modes are divided among spokes around a circular hub, and you can run around as small versions of the game’s characters, sometimes in alternate outfits. While cute at first, you soon learn to just hit the quick menu button and avoid running around at all as there’s no benefit other than visualizing visiting a different venue for each mode.

The game tries to incentivize you through unlockable avatars for the overworld, but even if this sounds good, you can only earn them through randomized loot boxes. You earn money as you fight and complete story mode milestones and these can be cashed in for a capsule which turns into a random cosmetic item, be it graphics for your fighter profile, the aforementioned avatars, or alternate color palettes for in-combat outfits. The premium currency in the game can be earned when you open a capsule to find a duplicate item. Spending premium currency will simply net you an item that you don’t already own–not one of your choosing. Rather than harm the game, the system feels a bit unnecessary as none of the rewards are critical to enjoying what matters most: participating in explosive battles and enjoying interactions between Dragon Ball’s lovably bizarre characters.

Though merely a small piece of the overall puzzle, the rare Dramatic Finishes are perhaps the most respectable and impressive nod to fans in FighterZ. Anyone who’s spent years watching Dragon Ball Z unfold over nearly 300 episodes will gasp the first time they trigger one, which will only happen with certain matchups under particular conditions. They have nothing to do with FighterZ’s story, but they have everything to do with the revered history of the series at large.

FighterZ is complex and distinct enough to be enjoyed by fighting game competitors, but there’s no question that it’s been designed to tap into the hearts of Dragon Ball’s most dedicated fans, and no doubt those same qualities will win people over who’ve never given the series a chance. Where past games attempted to get there through huge character rosters and deliberately predictable trips down memory lane, FighterZ has bottled the essence of what makes the series’ characters, animation, and sense of humor so beloved and reconfigured it into something new: a Dragon Ball fighting game that can go toe-to-toe with the best of the genre.

Editor’s note (Jan. 30, 12:38 PM PST): Shortly after release, Bandai Namco’s servers were inundated with eager players, to the point that it was at times difficult to get into a lobby at all. This no longer seems to be an issue, though even when servers behave as they should, the hub world at the center of it all proves to make matching up with friends a more complicated process than it ought to be. Rather than simply inviting a friend into a match, you have to coordinate to make sure you both log into the same server, and the same lobby, before finding each other’s avatars and creating a private match locked with a password. It doesn’t take long to get used to, but it’s also another sign that the hub world is an unnecessary complication.

GTA 5: What’s New To GTA Online For PS4, Xbox One, And PC This Week

Rockstar has rolled out another batch of new content for Grand Theft Auto V. The latest GTA Online update is now available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it adds a couple of new features to the online mode. On top of a new assortment of discounts and bonuses, this week’s update introduces the stylish Pfister Neon electric sports car, as well as a chaotic new mode called Hardest Target.

Hardest Target is an Adversary mode that pits two teams of up to 16 players against each other. The object of the mode is straightforward: eliminate the opposing team’s target while defending your own. “Only the Target’s life matters (and you can rack up bonus points for Target-on-Target violence), so the gung-ho approach is strongly recommended,” Rockstar says. To celebrate the launch of the new mode, players will earn double GTA$ and RP from Hardest Target until February 5.

In addition to that, players can earn 25% more GTA$ from Special Cargo Deliveries through February 5. Rockstar is also offering a big selection of in-game discounts on Bunkers, Special Cargo Warehouses, and more items. This week, players will be able to get the Cargobob for 35% off, while all of the following will be 25% off:

Bunkers

  • Farmhouse Bunker
  • Thomson Scrapyard Bunker
  • Bunker Renovations (styles and add-ons)
  • Mobile Operation Center Cabs

Properties & Renovations

  • Special Cargo Warehouses
  • Executive Office Renovations

Vehicles & Armor

  • LF-22 Starling (Buy it Now & Trade Price)
  • Grotti Cheetah Classic
  • Vehicle armor
  • Bulletproof tires

This week’s Premium Race is Rally, which is restricted to Sports-class vehicles. Everyone who participates will earn triple RP, while those who finish in the top three will be rewarded with a big GTA$ payout. The Time Trial this week is Casino. Players who manage to beat the target time will be rewarded with GTA$ and RP.

Fortnite Offering Freebies To Players To Make Up For Recent Server Downtime Issues

Last week’s rollout of a new Fortnite update didn’t go as smoothly as planned, leading to an extended period of downtime across PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Epic Games has apologized for the situation and now plans to offer players of both the Battle Royale and Save the World modes a freebie to make up for it.

On the Battle Royale side, players will receive 20 Battle Stars toward their Battle Pass progression. The Battle Pass can be purchased to unlock various rewards as you play the game, with the primary being new cosmetic items. Epic offers the ability to buy Battle Pass ranks, so this will save you either some real-world money or the playtime it would require to amass 20 Stars.

For Save the World, which remains in paid early access (unlike the openly free-to-play Battle Royale), Epic will give players 1,600 Seasonal Gold, which is normally earned by completing missions during events. It can be spent in the event store on things like heroes and schematics.

These freebies won’t be available immediately. Epic isn’t putting an exact date on their availability, saying only that it will come “sometime after” the upcoming 2.4.0 patch is released. The most recent updates primarily dealt with bug fixes, although the new Chug Jug item was added last week. Prior to that, Epic released a major update that revamped Fortnite’s map. And right now, you can try out Fortnite’s new limited-time sniper mode.

Destiny 2 Update And Iron Banner Out Now; Here Are The Patch Notes

Bungie has concluded its server maintenance routine, and Destiny 2 servers are back online. The first Iron Banner event of Season 2, which began in early December with Curse of Osiris’s release, is now live for a limited time, and a major new update has been released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Here’s exactly what it does.

As Bungie detailed previously, update 1.1.2 introduces Masterwork armor. This is a rare quality that all Legendary armor can take on, and it operates similarly to the Masterwork weapons system added in December. Essentially, Legendary armor can drop as (or be upgraded to) a Masterwork version, which provides you with an additional stat bonus that can be re-rolled. Each piece of Masterwork armor also offers a 3% damage resistance bonus while your Super is active; this effect stacks, offering a maximum of 15% if all five of your armor pieces are Masterworks. These items can be obtained through all of the normal means, though Trials of the Nine and Raid activities are more likely to drop them. Dismantling them provides you with materials that can then be used to upgrade a Legendary item into a Masterwork.

Drops related to the Raid have also changed in a number of ways. By completing a corresponding activity in a given week, you’ll be able to purchase a rotating selection of armor or weapons from Benedict 99-40. Raid encounters are now guaranteed to drop a piece of armor or a weapon, and completing a Prestige Raid encounter before doing the normal version will get you rewards from both the Prestige and normal versions. A new Exotic Ghost exclusive to Leviathan can now be found during Raid activities’ final encounter. Finally, as pictured below, Raid armor all now have unique mods with new perks that only work when on the Leviathan. These can be rotated in and out by spending a Raid Token, and even existing Raid armor will have a spot to equip these mods.

This patch kicks off the Iron Banner event, which features new gear to earn. Other notable changes include a reduction in the amount of XP needed to receive an Illuminated Engram; it now takes 120,000, rather than 160,000. Both the Gleaming Boon of the Crucible and Vanguard have seen their Bright Dust prices slashed. And several individual items have seen balance fixes or changes; Prometheus Lens, for instance, which was a major problem in Crucible after its release and was later nerfed, has seen its damage increased. Additionally, its Flame Refraction perk no longer pulls ammo from your reserves; instead, it generates fresh ammo to use.

There are a ton of other tweaks made in this update too, and the patch notes are quite long. You can see them in full on Bungie’s website.

What to watch for in Trump’s SOTU speech

It is the blockbuster US news event of the week, with an estimated 40 million people preparing to tune in to watch President Donald Trump deliver his first State of the Union address.

The keynote speech will be an opportunity for the president to outline his agenda for the next 12 months, shape political policy and highlight past accomplishments.

“It’s a big speech, an important speech,” Mr Trump said on Monday. But what can we expect?

1. Taking credit

“The economy will be front and centre,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters on Monday.

After a turbulent first year in office, President Trump is very likely to start with the positives – his tax reforms that were passed through the Senate at the end of last year. They are the most significant overhaul of the US tax code in a generation, slashing corporate and individual tax rates.

Many expect him to link these reforms with America’s improving economy, roaring stock markets and lowering unemployment rates.

Plans to rebuild some of America’s aging roads and other infrastructure may also get a mention, as well as demands for reciprocal trade with China.

2. Dreamers debate

Deep divisions remain between Democrats and Republicans over immigration reform, and the president is expected to push for a bipartisan solution.

At the heart of his proposal are the 700,000 young people who entered the US illegally and without documents as children, so-called Dreamers. His decision to overturn a scheme – Daca – that shields these people from deportation outraged Democrats.

The president may touch on the subject as he is hoping to draw Democrats in with a deal to overturn these plans, in return for securing billions for a proposed border wall with Mexico, and cuts to legal immigration levels.

All eyes and cameras will be trained on at least 24 Democratic lawmakers who are bringing Dreamers as their guests to watch the show, according to ABC News.

3. Presidential or Twitter Trump?

It won’t be his first speech in Congress as Donald Trump addressed both houses last February, when he stated the US was witnessing a “renewal of the American spirit”. In fact, he surprised many by adopting a more presidential and measured tone than expected.

However, just days after this speech, he returned with a claim on Twitter that his predecessor, Barack Obama, had hacked his phones during the presidential campaign.

The tone of his maiden State of the Union address remains to be seen, but many will be wondering whether he will stick to the script – or the teleprompter – like he did last time.

4. The elephant in the room

The issue that has completely overshadowed Donald Trump’s first year in office is unlikely to come up today – the investigation into whether he or his campaign colluded with Russia to sway the election in his favour.

Mr Trump has condemned the Russia probe as a witch hunt, though he recently said he would testify under oath if his lawyers agreed.

While it would take many by surprise if he raised the subject, it would not be the first time a sitting president has addressed an ongoing investigation around them.

In 1974 Richard Nixon used his State of the Union address to call for an end to the Watergate investigation, telling lawmakers: “One year of Watergate is enough!”

Months later he resigned over the scandal which involved a web of political spying, sabotage and bribery.

President Bill Clinton adopted a different approach more than two decades later, when he was on trial for perjury and obstruction of justice over an affair with intern Monica Lewinsky. He failed to mention the case in his address in 1999 and was later acquitted of the charges.

5. Kennedy scion gets first response

Joseph Kennedy III, a rising star who is also part of the Kennedy political dynasty, faces the daunting task of delivering the Democrats’ response to President Trump’s address.

The 37-year-old Massachusetts representative rose to the spotlight after his criticism of Republican attempts to end Obamacare.

His nomination as rebutter-in-chief suggests the Democrats are willing to have a younger generation represent the party. Some observers believe he will appeal to working- and middle-class voters who his party argues have been neglected by Trump.

2016 hopeful Bernie Sanders will also offer his own take on the union address on his various social media platforms.

6. The guests – and the designated survivor

As is customary, the president brings along a group of guests, sometimes called “Skutniks”. The name comes from a man, Lenny Skutnik, who was honoured by President Ronald Reagan in his 1982 address after jumping into the icy Potomac river in Maryland to rescue survivors of a plane crash.

President Trump’s guests include first responders, military veterans, a welder from Ohio who says he is benefiting from recent tax cuts and the parents of children killed by an El Salvadorean street gang, MS-13, which the president has vowed to wipe out.

Media playback is unsupported on your device

Lawmakers are also allowed to bring their own guests. Dreamers, sexual assault victims and victims of gun violence are all said to be on the list of attendees.

Some prominent Democratic legislators won’t be showing up at all – including John Lewis, Maxine Waters and Jan Schakowsky – in protest against the president, who has caused outrage in recent weeks over his crude remarks about African countries, leading to accusations of racism.

And at least one member of Trump’s cabinet will miss the proceedings – the designated survivor, who remains in a secure location to ensure continuity of government should a catastrophic event occur.

The First Purge Poster Wants To Make America Great Again

The next film in the Purge franchise is going back in time. The First Purge will be a prequel set during the first year of the annual one-day murder spree. In preparation for the new film, Blumhouse–the studio behind the franchise–has revealed the movie’s synopsis, cast, and a very interesting first poster.

The synopsis of the movie reads, “Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.”

No Caption Provided

The poster for the movie is rather simple but powerful. As you can see above, the film’s title is embroidered on a red baseball cap, invoking imagery of the Make America Great Again hats that are closely associated with Donald Trump’s presidency.

While the roles they will play is unclear, the movie will be comprised of a brand-new cast that includes Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, and Marisa Tomei. This marks the second role set in a dystopian world for Tomei in recent weeks; She will also appear in the second season of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. The movie will be directed by Gerald McMurray and written by James DeMonaco.

The First Purge–the fourth film in the series–will hit theaters on July 4. What better way to celebrate America’s independence that seeing the worst case scenario for what it could become?
