What Did You Think of Tonight’s South Park?

Change is in the air in South Park, Colorado. PC Principal had to deal with the rise of some unexpected feelings in this week’s episode, even as Kyle took a stand against the “boys will be boys” mentality of South Park Elementary.

On this week’s Xbox show, we discuss a bunch of stories we’d rather not have to report, including the Fortnite lawsuit involving a 14-year-old boy, the “sunsetting” of Marvel Heroes Omega, and the comatose state of the Deus Ex franchise. On a happier note, Square Enix’s CEO shows integrity when speaking about Hitman and Io Interactive, single-player games thrive over Black Friday weekend, this year’s Unlock Block trivia trophy gets awarded, and more! Batman: Creature of the Night #1 Review

I consider Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen’s Superman: Secret Identity to be one of the best Superman stories ever published, so you’d better believe I was looking forward to this book. Batman: Creature of the Night is a spiritual sequel of sorts to Secret Identity. Once again, you have a young boy whose love of an iconic superhero is so great that the boundaries between reality and fantasy begin to blur. Creature of the Night has all the makings of another great superhero story that’s as much about the real-world legacy of that hero as it is the hero themselves.

In this case, Busiek and artist John Paul Leon introduce readers to Bruce Wainwright, a younger whose obsession with all things Batman is only fueled by the fact that he almost shares his name. Like Secret Identity’s Clark Kent, Bruce find his life growing uncomfortably close to that of his fictional idol when tragedy strikes and his dreams become haunted by a demonic bat creature. This isn’t as simple as a story of a boy being compelled to dress in costume and fight crime. There’s something more surreal and compelling to the way Batman bleeds into the real-world setting of this tale.

Dark Will Scratch Your Stranger Things Itch on Netflix

With Stranger Things and Marvel’s The Punisher in the rear-view mirror, knowing what to watch next in the streaming world is a difficult task. There is so much content available that it can be overwhelming. Thankfully, Netflix has a new show dropping on December 1 that is worth checking out.

Dark is the streaming giant’s first original series made in Germany (with English subtitles). The 10-episode supernatural thriller is centered around a small German town and follows four unique families who have more in common than they realize. In the vein of Stranger Things and Twin Peaks, mysteries abound in this seemingly peaceful town where nothing is supposed to go wrong.

Dark takes its cues from shows that have been pop culture successes in recent years. The Stranger Things comparison is relevant, due to the use of 80’s music, kids riding bikes, and a government conspiracy lurking at the edge of town. Instead of the Hawkins Laboratory from Stranger Things, there’s a large nuclear power plant looming in the distance. The power plant is hiding something from the town’s residents. When two children go missing near the plant, the officials at the nuclear facility are reluctant to help.

Super Mario Cereal Is A Real Thing

[UPDATE] The Kellogg’s UK Twitter account confirmed that the Super Mario Cereal is real, though it won’t be released in the UK.

The original story is below.

Kellogg’s is apparently making Mario cereal. The cereal-focused website Cerealousy reported this week that it found references to a Super Mario Odyssey-themed cereal with star-shaped oats and marshmallow pieces in the shapes of coin boxes and 1-up mushrooms, among other things. Not only that, but the cereal box will apparently come with an Amiibo that unlocks something in Odyssey. We are excited about all of this.

A Cerealousy reader told the site that they received confirmation from Kellogg’s that this Mario cereal is real and is coming to stores right now in the United States.

Twitter user Wario64 found a reference to the new Mario cereal in retailer Target’s database, while IGN discovered a page on Walmart’s website for it. So now it just seems like a matter of time before Nintendo confirms this.

As Cerealousy reminds us, Nintendo released a cereal called Nintendo Cereal System back in the ’80s, containing cereal based on Mario and Zelda. It also came with collectible cards, so now it appears history is repeating itself but updated for modern times.

In September this year, Nintendo announced a partnership with Post to put Mario branding on cereals like Honey Bunches of Oats, Honeycomb, Golden Crisp, and more.

Last year, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said that as result of changes in the gaming landscape, fewer and fewer young people are discovering Nintendo games through…games. Instead, they’re finding out about Nintendo and its characters through things like officially licensed Mario toothbrushes. The executive said you can expect these kinds of licensing deals to continue and possibly increase, so it seems like the new Mario cereal might be part of that effort, and we’re OK with that.

Breakfast is, after all, the most important meal of the day.

Live-Action Pikachu Movie Casts Female Lead

The live-action Pokemon movie, Detective Pikachu, has found its female lead. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton will play the lead female role. Others reportedly in contention for the role included Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things), Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why), and Haley Lu Richardson (Split).

According to THR, the movie just recently finished an “intense session of reading and testing” for the part, with Newton ultimately winning the part. She’ll star in the film opposite the male lead, Justice Smith (The Get Down). Newton is now reportedly in negotiations, so it sounds like the deal is not yet completely finalised, though it might just be a matter of time.

Newton will play a character named Lucy who is a “sassy journalist.” It’s not immediately clear who Smith is playing; Pikachu is of course also in the movie, presented as a motion-capture character. Last month, it was reported that big names were being considered to voice Pikachu, including Hugh Jackman, Mark Wahlberg, Ryan Reynolds, and Dwayne Johnson.

Detective Pikachu will be based on the Japanese video game Great Detective Pikachu, in which the Pokemon character features as a master detective. It’s something like Sherlock Holmes but with Pikachu. Unlike the character’s primary appearances in Pokemon games, the detective version of Pikachu speaks, which explains why producers are considering actors with such familiar voices. Production is set to begin in January, but there is no word yet on a release date.

In other Pokemon news, The Pokemon Company announced this week that the franchise has now passed 300 million unit sales across 76 titles dating back to 1996.
