Venom #157 Review

Plenty of Spider-Man fans are questioning Sony’s decision to move forward with a Spider-Man-less Venom movie. But this series proves that such a thing is not only possible, it can do justice to the character. Why do you need Spider-Man when Venom is perfectly happy to take on the character’s rogues gallery himself? Therein lies the appeal with this current story arc.

On paper, Kraven the Hunter seems badly outmatched against his symbiotic prey. But if writer Mike Costa does anything right in this story, it’s highlighting Kraven’s cunning, bloodthirsty nature and his ability to out-think and out-plan his more powerful prey. In short, he works just as well as a nemesis to Eddie Brock as he has for Peter Parker all these years. I do wish this issue devoted a little more time to exploring the Venom/Kraven dynamic directly, but it certainly succeeds in casting Kraven as a major threat in Venom’s efforts to reestablish himself as New York’s designated Lethal Protector.

Mister Miracle #4 Review

One of the great things about Jack Kirby’s work is that he often blended the most outlandish, bombastic concepts with perfectly ordinary, mundane trappings. The intersection between the mighty gods of Asgard and the ordinary mortals of Earth is at the very heart of Marvel’s Thor comics. It makes sense that there would be something of that juxtaposition at work in the Fourth World comics, too, as that mythology began life as an extension of the Thor franchise. That’s a quality that tom King and Mitch Gerads tap into with the latest chapter of Mister Miracle, as the series works ever harder to blend the grandeur of the New Gods with the depressing day-to-day existence of Scott Free.

Black Panther Star on the Political Statement T’Challa’s Accent Makes

The king and protector of Wakanda doesn’t speak with a European accent, and star Chadwick Boseman says the choice is very much deliberate.

Speaking to CNET, Boseman said his accent is based around the fact that in the Marvel universe, Wakanda has never been conquered.

“There’s no way he would speak with a European accent” without the influence of colonialism, he said.

Boseman said in the colonialist system, “in order to be a ruler, his education comes from Europe.” Since Wakanda is the most technologically advanced nation on Earth “without colonialism tainting it,” Boseman eschewed any accent that might betray that.
