Easy Does It – The Case for Lowering the Difficulty

One of the first times I remember taking notice of the difficulty settings in a game was the original Doom. The game practically taunted me with its two lowest options: “I’m too young to die” and “Hey, not too rough,” implying that I wasn’t really serious about playing if I didn’t at least bump it up to “Hurt me plenty.” The message was clear – developer id Software wanted me to test my mettle and experience Doom as it was designed to be experienced – intense and challenging.

Many games, after all, are entirely built around the concept of challenge. These are the games that include an easy option only begrudgingly, or to make you feel more bad-ass for choosing one of the harder options. These are the games that want you to say “to hell with it, bring on the early-onset arthritis.”

Jeffrey Tambor Leaves Transparent Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations

Actor Jeffrey Tambor has dropped out of the Emmy-winning Amazon TV Transparent amid sexual harassment allegations by members of the production team. Speaking to Deadline, Tambor said playing Maura Pfefferman on the show as “one of the greatest privileges and creative experiences of my life.”

He added that it has become clear over the past two weeks that “this is no longer the job I signed up for four years ago.” Tambor went on to respond to the allegations, saying it is “utterly untrue” that he would “deliberately harass” anyone.

“I’ve already made clear my deep regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being aggressive, but the idea that I would deliberately harass anyone is simply and utterly untrue,” Tambo said. “Given the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set, I don’t see how I can return to Transparent.

Following the accusations, the Transparent writing team reportedly held discussions about writing Tambor’s character out of the show for its new season. According to Deadline’s sources, Amazon hadn’t renewed Tambor’s contract, even before the allegations surfaced, so it was possible he was always on the way out.

In his first public statement following the allegations, Tambor said he recognises that he “hasn’t always been the easiest person to work with.” He added, “I can be volatile and ill-tempered, and too often I express my opinions harshly and without tact. But I have never been a predator–ever.”

Tambor received high praise for his role on Transparent, winning an Emmy for his performance. He also starred in Arrested Development

EA Stock Price Drops After Star Wars Battlefront 2 Microtransaction Removal

Late last week, on the eve of Star Wars: Battlefront II‘s wide release, Electronic Arts made the huge announcement that it was temporarily removing microtransactions. EA did so in the wake of a wave of criticism about how players could spend money to buy loot boxes, which contain items that theoretically provide an advantage on the battlefield. It appears that Wall Street is taking notice of this move, as EA’s stock price closed on Friday, November 17–the day Battlefront II came out–down by around 2.5 percent.

That comes out to around $2.78, dropping EA’s stock price to $108.82 at market close on Friday. The market opens again on Monday morning, so we’ll see what happens then. For the month overall, EA’s stock price is down by 7 percent, though for the full year, EA is doing incredibly well; it’s stock price is up 42 percent this year.

EA submitted documentation with the United States Securities & Exchange Commission last week that said the removal of microtransaction is “not expected to have a material impact on EA’s fiscal year 2018 financial guidance.” For the year ending March 31, 2018, EA expects to make $5.075 billion in revenue and a profit of $1.136 billion.

EA will add microtransactions back to Battlefront II in the future, though it remains to be seen when they’ll come back and if the progression/loot crate system is changed. If microtransactions come back before the end of EA’s FY18, EA’s revenue and profit could be even higher.

Star Wars: Battlefront II’s microtransaction/loot crate system was highly contentious and controversial running back to when players discovered how the system worked in October’s open beta. Loot boxes come with random items, but instead of things that are cosmetic only, they can also contain game-affecting things like deadlier grenades or cloaking abilities that give players a theoretical advantage.

EA’s statement on the removal of Battlefront II’s microtransactions quoted DICE boss Oska Gabrielson as saying, “We’ve heard the concerns about potentially giving players unfair advantages. And we’ve heard that this is overshadowing an otherwise great game. This was never our intention. Sorry we didn’t get this right.”

With all in-game purchases for Battlefront II now removed, progression is now exclusively tied to gameplay. EA is bringing back microtransactions “at a later date,” but not until the studio has time to make unspecified “changes to the game.” More details on this changes will come later as DICE considers more feedback and date. One possibility is that Battlefront II’s microtransactions will return as cosmetic only, as is the case in Overwatch and other games, though this is just speculation.

“We have created a game that is built on your input, and it will continue to evolve and grow,” Gabrielson explained.

Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Responds To Games-As-A-Service Speculation With An Amazing Tweet

The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red’s upcoming RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, is one of the most anticipated games across the entire industry. Given the new trend towards the games-as-a-service model, some are wondering if the Polish studio’s new game will follow suit. That remains to be seen, but now CD Projekt Red has told fans not to worry, as Cyberpunk 2077 will offer “honest gaming” instead of something slimy.

In response to this Pretty Good Gaming video in which the hosts speculate on whether or not Cyberpunk 2077 may use a games-as-a-service model, CD Projekt Red released probably one of the strongest video game tweets of the year.

“Worry not. When thinking Cyberpunk 2077, think nothing less than The Witcher 3–huge single-player, open world, story-driven RPG,” reads a line from the tweet. “No hidden catch, you get what you pay for–no bullsh**; just honest gaming like with Wild Hunt. We leave greed to others.”

Pretty Good Gaming’s video used quotes from CD Projekt Red management in an interview Polish financial publication Strefa. The studio said CD Projekt Red wants to make Cyberpunk 2077 even more commercially successful than The Witcher 3 (of course), with the suggestion that it having an online element–which it might–helping the game to do this.

It is understandable and expected that CD Projekt Red would want Cyberpunk 2077 to be even more of a success than The Witcher 3. The Witcher 3 has reportedly sold 10 million copies. Often times games use an online element to help maintain and grow its playerbase over time. The Witcher 3 has no multiplayer mode, and, impressively, its sales still managed to grow more than a year after release. Back in 2013, CD Projekt Red confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will have some multiplayer element, but it remains to be seen what this will be.

Cyberpunk 2077 in a dystopian future and is being made in partnership with Cyberpunk RPG designer Mike Pondsmith. Platforms have not been announced, but PS4, Xbox One, and PC seem likely.

In October, CD Projekt Red said development on Cyberpunk 2077 is “progressing as planned,” adding that “in this case, silence is the cost of making a great game.” Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red acknowledged that early Cyberpunk 2077 files had leaked and were being held for ransom.

Hitman’s Elusive Targets Are Back for a Limited Time

IO Interactive has brought Elusive Targets back to Hitman for a limited time.

Sergei Larin (aka The Forger) is currently active in Paris and will remain active until November 27, being the first of many Elusive Targets cycling through the episodic assassination game, according to IO Interactive.

Elusive Targets are unique contracts that players only have one chance to kill. Whether they succeed or fail, that attempt is all there is. Elusive Targets do not appear on the map or in Instinct. Instead players will need to parse clues from briefing materials and study their reference photograph to track down their target.

The Latest Fortnite Battle Royale Update Is All About Balance

Fortnite‘s latest updates its free-to-play mode Battle Royale are here, and all about balance. This latest update has added a brand new weapon, shifted some of the balance on other weapons, and picks up some of the slack on team killers.

This update brings in a new version of the SMG, a much more stealthy and quiet version: the silenced SMG. But this isn’t the only weapon at attention with these changes. The standard SMG will be improved in terms of damage and magazine size.

In additions to balancing the SMG, the supposed legendary drop of the bush consumable isn’t so legendary any more. The devs heard your feedback and have lowered the drop rate for the item, making it just a wee bit harder to get your hands on.

Going forward, the team does want to make the fan-made rocket and grenade riding an actual feature of the game. Support will eventually come, as long as it doesn’t cause any game-breaking issues. A public test server is also in the works.

As for team kills, Epic is finally addressing the issue. After admitting that team kills were something the team did drop the ball on, they are working towards a solution. It should be noted that this update doesn’t fix the issue. As of right now, all you can do as a player is report those who are playing in malicious and unfair ways, and your feedback will help develop the system they intend to put into place as a solution.

Rainbow Six Siege: Operation White Noise Operators And Map Details Revealed

Rainbow Six Siege‘s Pro Finals are well underway, and with them comes new details about the latest expansion for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One game. We got our hands on Operation White Noise and tried its new operators and its beautiful new map, Mok Myeok Tower, and you can see all the new gameplay footage in our video above. We’re still waiting on a release date, but technical test servers for Operation White Noise go live on November 20.

We knew Operation White Noise was bringing a “high-tech communications tower” in Seoul to the game, but now we got to check out this beautiful new level for ourselves. It’s a three level map where defenders get the bottom two floors and attackers get the top two floors plus exterior, providing lots of opportunity for vertical gunfights. The interior space puts both teams on even footing.

The first of the three new operators, Dokkaebi, is focused on hacking cameras and opponents’ cell phones, which is a major game changer for attackers. The other attacker, Zofia, fires concussion and impact grenades at range, allowing her to play a key support role. The third Operator, defender Vigil, has an ability that renders him invisible to drones and cameras, a good counterpoint to Dokkaebi.
