Assassin’s Creed: Origins Update Adding “Nightmare” Difficulty And More

A big new update for Assassin’s Creed: Origins is coming this month. In addition to adding a Final Fantasy Chocobo horse (yes, really), the update will add a new difficulty level called “Nightmare.” As you could guess, this is going to make the game ultra-difficult. The official patch notes explain that enemies will be “more resilient to damages and more dangerous.” There is no word, however, about what else is changed.

The December Origins update also adds a much-requested feature: enemy scaling. This means the game will automatically scale enemies of a lower level to your current level. This is an optional feature, so you don’t have to have it turned on. Additionally, the update expands the Heka Chest offerings by adding new Nightmare and First Civ items.

Two new quests are included with the Origins December update, the first of which, Here Comes a New Challenger, adds the Horde mode. As in other games, this will see players facing off against an “unlimited” wave of enemies. Ubisoft says you should be at least level 32 to play Horde mode, but of course you can give it a go at a lower level. The second quest is the unnamed one that gets you the Chocobo horse.

Additionally, the December Origins update adds the goddess warrior Sekhmet to the Trials of the Gods event. It sounds like a tall task. “Are you ready to face the fiercest hunter known to the ancient Egyptians?” Ubisoft asked. The first two Trials of the Gods enemies were Anubis and Sobek, and if you missed out on fighting them, the good news is that all three–Anubis, Sobek, and Sekhmet–will be available in December.

Finally, the new update adds more items to buy in the Origins in-game store. On December 12, you’ll be able to pick up the Gladiator Items Pack, which includes the Spaniard’s Armor, the Palladium shield, and Hercules’ Gladius sword, as well as a heavy blade (the Labrys) and a spear (Neptune’s Grasp).

Then on December 26, Ubisoft will release the “Wacky” item pack, which comes with a mount and four weapons. Ubisoft is keeping quiet on the specifics for now, but teased that it will be “a perfect fit for the bath towel outfit.” We’ll circle back with more details when they become available.

Origins launched in late October for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Sales were strong, apparently, nearly doubling Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate’s over their respective first 10 days. For more, check out GameSpot’s Assassin’s Creed Origins review.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins Adding Chocobo Horse Because Why Not

The bizarre and unexpected partnership between Ubisoft and Square Enix continues with a Final Fantasy Chocobo horse coming to Assassin’s Creed: Origins. Yeah, why not.

A new update for Origins coming soon adds a quest that, when completed, will apparently reward you with some kind of Chocobo horse. Below you can see an animated GIF of said horse, as posted on the Assassin’s Creed website. No word as of yet what kind of special attributes this unique creature may have, but we’re excited to find out.

As mentioned, Ubisoft and Square Enix have worked together before on a crossover event. In August, Final Fantasy XV was updated to include an Assassin’s Creed event that includes mini-games, items, and other elements based on Assassin’s Creed. You can read more about the limited-time event here in GameSpot’s previous coverage.

There is no word yet as to when specifically the update that contains the Chocobo horse will be released, but we sure hope it’s soon. We’ll report back with more details on this Very Important News as it’s revealed.

GameSpot’s Assassin’s Creed Origins review scored the PS4, Xbox One, and PC open-world action game a 7/10. “Assassin’s Creed has undergone many changes in its long and storied history, and Origins feels like the first step in the start of a new journey,” reviewer Alessandro Fillari said. “It has its fair share of problems, but the vision for its future is one worth pursuing.”

Bryan Singer No Longer Directing Queen Biopic

20th Century Fox’s upcoming Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, will no longer be directed by Bryan Singer.

“Bryan Singer is no longer the director of Bohemian Rhapsody,” the studio said in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter. Earlier this month, Fox stopped production on the film due to the “unexpected unavailability” of the director.

Singer was reportedly absent during production multiple times, causing Tom Hollander—who stars in the film as Queen manager Jim Beach—to allegedly quit for a brief period before being persuaded to return. Rami Malek—who plays Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the movie—reportedly complained to the studio about Singers unprofessionalism.
