They Put A Giant Lightsaber In The Sky Last Night

To promote this year’s much-anticipated Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Disney went all out with a dramatic and over-the-top event last night in Sydney, Australia. The company put a 60-meter version of Kylo Ren’s lightsaber in the sky over the Sydney Harbour. If you didn’t know what was happening, it was probably a strange sight to behold. The lightsaber, which was suspended by a helicopter, featured 10,800 hand-soldered LEDs to create the strong red light that could be seen throughout the harbour, according to Punkee.

Disney also used “optical imaging technology” to project an image that could be seen in 360 degrees to alert fans, of course, to the fact that tickets are now available. You can check out the official Star Wars video below to see the lightsaber and more in action. Twitter is ablaze with awesome images and videos from the marketing event, too, so you can go see all of those here.

This insane marketing event was held in conjunction with the new Last Jedi trailer. You watch the trailer here and check out our detailed breakdown of the key scenes here.

The Last Jedi‘s cast includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, and Andy Serkis. Although Fisher passed away in December 2016, Princess Leia will nonetheless appear in the film; it’ll be the character’s final apperance, as she will not be resurrected for Episode IX. The film is due out on December 15.

Fortnite’s Battle Royale Mode Had 3.7 Million Players On Sunday

Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode is proving popular, it seems. Developer Epic Games announced on Twitter that the game reached 3.7 million players on Sunday, October 8. At its peak that day, Battle Royale had 525,000 concurrent users, Epic added.

Those figures cover North America, Europe, and Oceania, and are presumably the sum of players across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The numbers are huge, and even more evidence that people are excited about the Battle Royale experience, wherever they can find it.

Fortnite Battle Royale’s player figures are massive and impressive, but they pale in comparison to the game it is often compared to, PUBG. That game had an absolutely astonishing 1.93 million peak concurrent players today, according to public Steam data.

Battle Royale continues to grow. It reached 1 million players on launch day in September. As for the base game, Epic announced in July that 500,000 people bought one of the game’s paid tiers just days after it launched.

Fortnite’s base game is available starting at $40 right now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC through the Founder’s Pack. In 2018, the game will adopt a free-to-play business model. As for Battle Royale, the game is completely free on all platforms.

Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode bears some similarities with PUBG in that it’s a 100-player, Hunger Games-style, fight to the death, last-player-standing, white-knuckle experience. PUBG developer Bluehole recently responded to Epic overall Fornite: Battle Royale, calling out the similarities and threatening “action” against Epic. Nothing has come to light as of yet, it seems, though it will be interesting to see what happens in the future. For more, check out GameSpot’s video feature on the subject embedded above.

Destiny’s Shaxx Actor Told Us His Favorite Unreleased Line From The Crucible

Destiny and Destiny 2‘s Shaxx–the Crucible master who cheers us on, celebrates our victories, and laments our losses in multiplayer matches–has become increasingly more ridiculous as the game’s evolved. Some have even compared his often lengthy monologues marveling at players’ greatest accomplishments to Shakespearean epics.

Turns out that wasn’t far off the mark. The actor behind Shaxx, Lennie James, revealed to GameSpot a line of dialogue he recorded for Shaxx that’s never been heard, and it’s straight out of Romeo and Juliet.

“My relationship to the game is that every few months, whichever city I am in in the world, I get a telephone call saying ‘[Bungie] would like to lock you in a room for four hours and have you speak a lot of lines that you have no idea the relevance of,'” James told us while discussing his role in Blade Runner 2049.

“This time last week, I was just about to go into the studio to do another three-hour session for another add-on that they’re bringing out for Destiny 2 in the next few months,” he continued.

When we asked him what his favorite Shaxx line of all is, he surprised us by reciting one that’s never been heard.

“There is one where he kind of quotes Shakespeare,” James said. “‘But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and I–I am the Crucible.'”

The literary nerds out there will recognize that as a nearly direct quote from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: “But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.” It’s totally something Shaxx would say, although with the way game development works, it might also never make it into the game at all.

“That was quite good fun,” James said. “[Shaxx] has become a little bit full of himself!”

James is open about the fact that he’s not a gamer and has little idea what Destiny is actually about. That makes it even funnier for him when he goes in the booth to record all of Shaxx’s over-the-top lines of dialogue.

“Each time I go in the room, I get an update on how popular Lord Shaxx is and how popular the Crucible part of the game is becoming,” he said. “I’m constantly staggered by how many Destiny fans there are out there and, you know, strangely, I do really enjoy being Lord Shaxx. It’s a fun three hours of talking to myself.”

All The Overwatch Halloween Terror 2017 Skins And Weapons

It’s October, and with Halloween approaching, Blizzard is marking the occasion with a new Overwatch event. Halloween Terror 2017 is now underway, and that means new skins are available for a limited time.

Like last year’s event, Halloween Terror replaces the standard Loot Box with a special themed one. This allows you to get the exclusive Halloween Terror 2016 cosmetics in addition to more than 50 new ones. Among them are a variety of skins, including Legendary ones for Ana, McCree, Zenyatta, and Symmetra. You can check out all of the new skins currently up for grabs in the gallery above.

In addition to simply offering new cosmetics, there’s also a new way to play. 2016’s Junkenstein’s Revenge event has made a return; this co-op, Horde-style mode has players facing off against waves of AI-controlled enemies. A new endless option this year allows you to see just how many waves your team of four can make it through. Leaderboards will track your progress and allow players to compete for the top spot.

Halloween Terror 2017 is now underway on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It runs until November 2 on all platforms.
