Netflix’s Maniac Review: How is the Bond 25 Director’s Surreal Series?
The Netflix limited series, Maniac, debuts Friday, September 21. This is a spoiler-free review for all 10 episodes.
Maniac, a 10-part event series starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone – who reunite for the first time since Superbad provided both of them with breakout roles – is a moderately-amusing, overly-trippy romp that’s sure to garner even more attention now that director Cary Fukunaga, of True Detective: Season 1 fame, has been hired to helm Bond 25.
Hill and Stone, giving it their ambitious all, play lost, damaged souls wandering a satire-saturated “five minutes from now” future world. The results here are mixed, yes, though Maniac’s cardinal sin is that it never touches down long enough to fully resonate emotionally the way it sets out to. It’s unpredictable and full of loopy left turns, sure, but it’s also often dull. Most definitely, it’s another instance of a Netflix show blowing its horn for ten notes when five would have done nicely, but it’s also because this specific type of oddball absurdist art doesn’t benefit from the almighty binge.

Here’s Why Captain Marvel Punched An Old Lady In The Movie’s New Trailer
The first official trailer for the upcoming Captain Marvel movie is finally here, and it covers a lot of the history behind the cosmic Avenger. However, one of the scenes from the trailer–where Captain Marvel punches an elderly woman in the face for no apparent reason–has plenty of people questioning the hero’s moral compass. But as anyone familiar with the character’s history in comics knows, there is a good reason for her aggression.
A major part of Carol Danvers history as Ms. Marvel–before her transformation into Captain Marvel–is the war between the alien Kree and Skrull races. Carol Danvers actually gains her super powers from a Kree military captain who’s named Mar-Vell and spying on the human race to see if Earth is a worthy ally in the fight against the Skrulls. We’ve already seen the Kree in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the blue-skinned Ronan, from the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, is a Kree. As far as we know, we haven’t seen a Skrull in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet because they are a race of shape-shifters. When the Kree and Skrull’s war comes to Earth, many of the Skrulls try to take over the world by disguising themselves as humans.
So when Carol Danvers punches out the old lady, she’s probably seen through a Skrull’s disguise. Captain Marvel is one of the few Avengers who’s specific power-set makes her perfect for taking on the Skrull. After her physiology is affected by Captain Mar-Vell’s DNA, Carol Danvers gains nearly a dozen superpowers. One of those powers is a limited precognitive sixth sense. It’s a lot like Spider-Man’s spider sense, but instead of simply alerting her to danger, Captain Marvel can see a few seconds into the future when a threat presents itself. Perhaps the Skrull on the train is supposed to get the jump on Captain Marvel, but she senses the attack coming before it happens and decides to strike out first.
Captain Marvel‘s first official trailer details Carol Danver’s transformation into Ms. Marvel, her ascendence to Captain Marvel, and her hand in putting a stop to the Kree/Skrull war on Earth. We’ve got a full trailer breakdown if you want to know about everything that’s going on.

There have been four big screen, live-action incarnations of the Joker in the last three decades, and each first look has provoked a different response — and each seemingly more divisive among fandom than the last.
The first look at Joaquin Phoenix in full clown makeup in Todd Phillips’ standalone Joker movie is only the latest example of that, and will almost certainly not be the last.
The respective first looks at the Jokers played by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and now Joaquin Phoenix were released in different ways depending on the media of their time. Nicholson’s debuted in traditional print media, Ledger’s was revealed via viral marketing, while both Leto and Phoenix’s debuted via social media.

Telltale Confirms ‘Majority Studio Closure’ and Layoffs, Fate of Future Projects in Limbo
Update: In a statement issued to IGN, Telltale Games confirmed it has “made the difficult decision to begin a majority studio closure following a year marked by insurmountable challenges.” The studio also confirmed it’ll retain 25 employees to “fulfill the company’s obligations to its board and partners.”

It’s been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry.
Monster Hunter Movie Will Have ‘Bloody Big Monsters,’ Says Director
Back in May, we learned that Capcom’s popular RPG, Monster Hunter, will be making its big screen debut with Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich cast in the leading role. Also attached to the project is Jovovich’s husband, Paul W.S. Anderson (Event Horizon), who will direct the live-action adaptation.
While speaking with Anderson about his upcoming YouTube original sci-fi horror series, Origin, the director shed some light on the Monster Hunter film and what we can expect to see when it hits theaters. “There are some bloody big monsters in it, I can tell you that, Anderson said, adding, “we have some very very big monsters.”
Marvel’s The Eternals Lands Director
It looks like the upcoming Marvel film The Eternals has found its director in Chloé Zhao.
This news comes from Variety, which reports that Zhao’s meeting with executives at Marvel impressed them so much that they acted quickly to book her as director before she became tied up in other films. Zhao is known for directing The Rider, a critically acclaimed western drama that won the Art Cinema Award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for four Spirit Awards.
Reports show that cousins Matthew and Ryan Firpo are writing the script and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is on board to produce. Created by Jack Kirby, The Eternals are an ancient race created by the cosmic Celestials who performed genetic experiments on early humans, effectively creating the first super-humans. This also created evil counterparts known as Deviants.
