The Convoluted History of Star Trek: Discovery’s Captain Pike Explained

Star Trek: Discovery is currently filming its second season for CBS All Access with an expected premiere date sometime in early 2019. Fans were left hanging when the first season ended with a stunning tease as the Discovery found itself face to face with the USS Enterprise. The famous ship’s arrival naturally led to the assumption (which was later confirmed) that we’d be meeting a younger version of lead character Michael Burnham’s adoptive brother Spock, who we now know will be played by Ethan Peck.

But since Discovery takes place about 10 years before the events of Captain Kirk’s The Original Series adventures on the Enterprise, the current commanding officer of the ship is Captain Christopher Pike (played by Inhumans’ Anson Mount on Discovery), who Trek history tells us helmed the Enterprise just before James Kirk took over. Though Pike only played a minor role in The Original Series in its final form (more on that in a moment), the character has endured across several films and television series and has been portrayed by four different actors to date. So let’s take a moment to get to know the first commanding officer of the Enterprise to give the order, “Engage!”

Free Xbox One Games With Gold Revealed For October 2018

Microsoft’s Major Nelson has announced the free Games with Gold for October 2018. Xbox owners with subscriptions to Xbox Live Gold will be able to download four new games at staggered intervals between October 1 and 31. The games in question are the Xbox One titles Overcooked and Victor Vran, and the Xbox 360 games Stuntman: Ignition and Hitman: Blood Money.

Overcooked is a co-op cooking game you can play with up to four players. Orders come in, and your job is to cook the food and deliver it before a timer runs out. This becomes more difficult as the dishes become increasingly labor-intensive and the kitchen layouts start to go to outlandishly unexpected places. It’s available the full month of October. Victor Vran is a loot-based action-RPG in the vein of Diablo III. It’s available October 16-November 15.

Over on Xbox 360, Stuntman: Ignition puts you in the shoes of a low-level stunt driver in Hollywood and has you work your way up to handling elaborate stunts in massive blockbuster films. It’s available October 1-15. And much like the rest of the series, Hitman: Blood Money finds Agent 47 working on open-ended assassination jobs in locations like a Las Vegas casino, New Orleans during Mardi Gras, and on a riverboat traveling the Mississippi River. It’s available October 16-31. Both 360 games are also playable on Xbox One.

It’s not too late to download some of September’s Games with Gold. Right now Xbox Live Gold members can grab Prison Architect and Livelock for Xbox One and Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

FLCL: Alternative Episode 3 Review

Spoilers for the episode follow.

The slow burn stylings of FLCL: Alternative continue with “Freestyle Collection.” Following the blueprint laid out by the previous episode, Freestyle Collection takes a closer look at Mossan through the lens of Kana’s constant struggle with her future prospects.

The episode kicks off when Kana, having not turned in her college planning sheet, inquires about what Mossan wrote down for hers. Mossan tells her friends about her dream of being a fashion designer and reveals she has made it through the first round of a fashion design contest. Unlike Hijiri’s fling from the last episode, which felt a little par for her character, Mossan’s reveal was actually a surprise to me and had me interested from the start. Mossan’s reveal also provided a great opportunity to add to Kana’s maturity crisis which has become one of the show’s main threads.

Bill Cosby Sentenced to 3-10 Years in Prison

Bill Cosby was sentenced three to 10 years in a state prison on Tuesday for sexually assaulting a woman at his home in 2004, reported by Variety.

Judge Steven T. O’Neill from Montgomery Country denied Cosby’s request for bail pending his appeal.

Cosby will need to serve the minimum time of three years under Pennsylvania law before he can be up for parole. The maximum sentence is five to 10 years in prison.

“This is a serious crime,” said O’Neill, who rejected the defense request for house arrest, partial confinement, and even a chance to serve the sentence in the county jail as opposed to state prison.
