EA CEO Responds To Florida Shooting Tragedy; Upcoming Tournaments Canceled
Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson has released a letter responding to the horrible tragedy in Florida that left three people dead at a Madden tournament. Wilson said the shooting at the Madden Classic qualifying tournament in Jacksonville, Florida was a “horrific and senseless actor of violence.”
“I know many of us, myself included, are filled with shock and grief. Our teams have been working non-stop to do what we can to respond to this terrible situation,” Wilson said.
Wilson said the two Madden competitors who lost their lives, Taylor Robertson and Elijah Clayton, represented the “epitome of the players and personalities at the heart of our community. Their love of competition was evident through their participation in our events over the past few years.”
Wilson said EA as a company will support their families in some capacity. He also extended EA’s sympathies to their loved ones, and everyone else affected by the tragedy.
The shooting took place at the first of multiple planned Madden Classic qualifying tournaments. In the wake of the shooting, Wilson said EA has canceled the remaining events as the company undertakes a “comprehensive review of safety protocols for competitors and spectators.” Looking ahead, Wilson pledged to establish a “consistent level of security” at all of its competitive gaming events.
“We’ve all been deeply affected by what took place in Jacksonville. This is the first time we’ve had to confront something like this as an organization, and I believe the first time our gaming community has dealt with a tragedy of this nature,” Wilson said. “Please take time to support each other through this challenging time.”

Xbox Free Games With Gold for September Announced
The Xbox Live Games With Gold lineup for September 2018 has been revealed.
Announced through Xbox Wire, the following games will be available for Xbox Live Gold members next month:
- Prison Architect – September 1-30 (Xbox One)
- Livelock – September 16-October 15 (Xbox One)
- LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars – September 1-15 (Xbox One, Xbox 360)
- Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World – September 16-30 (Xbox One, Xbox 360)
Prison Architect has players design, build, and run a maximum security prison. We gave the game an 8.3 in our review, saying Prison Architect is, “one of the most in-depth, satisfying builder games in a long time.”
Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s Major Xbox One X Update Is Now Live
The latest major update for Halo: The Master Chief Collection is now live.
The massive 73GB update, which 343 Industries announced and detailed last October, features a rework of the game’s matchmaking system, 4K HDR support for Xbox One X, shorter load times, improved matchmaking, offline LAN support, and much more.
The changes come just ahead of The Master Chief Collection’s addition to Xbox Game Pass on September 1.
Fortnite’s New Ace Pack Is A Good Deal, Includes V-Bucks And A Skin
Like many other free-to-play games, Fortnite features a variety of options for spending real-world money if you so choose, between its seasonal Battle Pass and various V-Buck bundles. Epic has introduced yet another bundle to Fortnite’s in-game store, and it’s a particularly good deal if you’re looking to get more V-Bucks.
The new Fortnite Ace Pack is now available to purchase on all platforms–PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile. The pack costs $5 and includes two new cosmetics: the Ace Outfit and the Swag Bag Back Bling, both of which can be seen below.
In addition to the customization items, the Ace Pack comes with 600 V-Bucks, which can be spent on other cosmetics for Battle Royale or put toward your Battle Pass. V-Bucks can typically only be acquired by playing Fortnite’s paid Save the World mode or purchasing them directly with real-money, and the cheapest tier nets you 1,000 for $10, making this pack a very good value, even if you aren’t interested in its cosmetics. However, the pack can only be purchased once per account.
The Ace Pack replaces the similar Starter Pack that Epic introduced to Fortnite: Battle Royale earlier this year. That likewise cost $5 and included 600 V-Bucks, along with a different pair of cosmetics–the Rogue Agent outfit and the Catalyst Back Bling–but it is no longer available for purchase.
In addition to the Ace Pack, Epic recently rolled out Fortnite’s 5.30 content update. That brought a new weapon to Battle Royale called the Shockwave Grenade and marked the start of the game’s latest limited-time mode, the returning Solid Gold. Save the World, meanwhile, received a new hero and another weekly Horde Challenge.
Three Of Nintendo’s Best Switch Games Get New Bundles With Strategy Guides
Nintendo has announced three new game bundles for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, and Super Mario Odyssey. Each bundle goes for $60 and will launch on September 28.
Referred to as “starter pack” versions of the games, each bundle includes both the game and a colored strategy guide to help players. Nintendo hasn’t revealed what’s exactly inside the guide, so it could be as simple as a collection of tips for getting started or as complex as a series of maps to every collectible and in-game secret. The company hasn’t revealed whether the Breath of the Wild or Splatoon 2 bundles include their respective title’s DLC expansions either. We’re following up with Nintendo PR in hopes of finding out.
Also on September 28, three new New Nintendo 2DS XL handhelds are launching, each for $150. The new handhelds come in purple and silver, black and turquoise, and orange and white. Each one comes with Mario Kart 7 preinstalled as well.
Nintendo also announced 22 new games coming to Switch over the next several months. The most surprising among them is Into the Breach. Previously a PC exclusive, this turn-based strategy game is one of our favorites from 2018, even scoring a 9/10 in our review. You can buy it right now for $15/£11.39 on the Nintendo Eshop.
