Box Office: Sonic the Hedgehog Races Past the Competition

Sonic made a rather large BOOM! at the box office over this President’s Day Weekend, racing past its initial predictions of $40-45 million to (b)ring in an estimated $57 million.

Worldwide, it’s brought in $100 million, making it the best showing of all time for a video game movie, according to Variety. With Monday being a holiday, Sonic is expected to pull in $68 million domestically.

Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey took in a decent $17.1 million over the weekend, which was enough to land it in second place Monday is expected to bump the take to $19.6 million.

Doing very well for themselves over the Valentine’s Day/President’s Day cluster were Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island, which earned $12.4 million, and The Photograph, starring Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield, which grabbed $12.2 million. Both films cost very little to produce.
